The Glen Alpin Conservancy is hosting an Open House on Sunday, September 18, from 2-4 pm that is free to the public. Come see our newest donation, a parlor organ! Recently the Conservancy was given an electric parlor organ that will be the topic of a talk at 3 pm by Troy Joseph Simmons, M.A., C.C., K.M. who is the Architectural Historian of the Archdiocese of Newark and is a Drew University Historic Preservation Faculty member.

The Glen Alpin Conservancy presented a check for $47,025 to Harding Township at tonight's Township Committee meeting, to be used toward rehabilitating the historic Gothic Revival house. With another check for $10,000 that we gave in December 2007, the Conservancy provided the entire match for two grants totaling $228,100 from the 2007 Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund. The county grants will pay for architectural and engineering services and new HVAC. With these essential items paid for, the township was then able to accept a spectacular $750,000 grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust. The Township Committee approved a contract with the Trust at the same meeting. Thanks to all GAC members and friends for making this possible!

The Conservancy was formed nearly five years ago. Our purpose is to raise funds toward the rehabilitation of Glen Alpin and to do whatever is necessary to make the site a public asset. We have raised funds for the township to use as matches for grants. We have prepared grant applications to rehabilitate the charming Gothic Revival home on the corner of Mt. Kemble and Tempe Wick Roads at one of the major gateways to Harding Township. Because we have no ownership of the house, most grants require permission from the owner (the township) if we apply for a grant, even if all proceeds go to the township and all work is to be done by us.

When the township purchased the 9 and one half acres, it cost the town open space fund $175,000! The remainder of the purchase price was paid for by the Harding Land Trust, Green Acres and County grants.
